Characteristics
- Stem: Columnar, green, with 8–12 prominent ribs; covered in small areoles bearing yellowish spines
- Spines: 1 central spine (1–2 cm long) and 8–10 radial spines (0.5–1 cm long) per areole
- Flower: White, funnel-shaped, nocturnal, up to 8 cm long; blooms near stem apex
- Fruit: Small, red, fleshy, edible when ripe (rarely cultivated for fruit)
Care Guide
Water deeply every 10–14 days; let soil dry fully between waterings
Diluted low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer once monthly. Discontinue fertilization in autumn and winter when growth slows
Eggshell powder topdressing:Crush dried eggshells into fine powder; sprinkle 1 tsp per pot every 3 months to improve soil drainage and boost calcium levels for healthy stem growth- Remove dead, discolored, or damaged stem segments to maintain plant health and appearance
- Trim offset pups from the base in spring for propagation
- Avoid over-pruning; only remove tissue that shows signs of disease or rot
