Characteristics
- Stem: Globular green body with 8–15 prominent, rounded ribs lined with sharp, pale spines
- Cephalium: Dense, woolly red/pink crown that develops only on mature, flowering plants
- Flower: Small, bell-shaped pink to pale purple blooms emerging from the cephalium
- Fruit: Red, elongated berry-like fruit, edible in small quantities
Care Guide
Water thoroughly when soil is completely dry; reduce frequency during extreme heatwaves
Diluted cactus fertilizer once monthly. Discontinue fertilization during dormancy to prevent root burn
Eggshell powder top-dressing:Crush dried, rinsed eggshells into fine powder; sprinkle lightly on the soil surface to add calcium without over-fertilizing- Gently remove dead spines or dried cephalium debris with sterile tweezers
- Trim small, damaged stem sections with a sharp, sterile knife to prevent rot spread
- Avoid cutting the cephalium, as it will not regrow once damaged
