Plant Needs
Characteristics
- Leaf: Modified into sharp, barbed spines (1–3 cm long) on areoles; flattened, oval green pads (cladodes) function as photosynthetic organs
- Flower: Bright yellow, cup-shaped blooms (5–10 cm diameter) with orange centers
- Fruit: Edible, reddish-purple oval tunas (2–5 cm long) covered in small, easily detached spines
Care Guide
Water deeply every 7–10 days when soil is fully dry; reduce frequency if pads appear plump
Diluted cactus-specific fertilizer once monthly. Use low-nitrogen, high-phosphorus fertilizer to promote flowering
Eggshell powder topdress:Crush dried eggshells into fine powder; sprinkle a thin layer on soil surface; avoid direct contact with pads to prevent irritation- Remove dead, damaged, or diseased pads in early spring using tongs to avoid spine injury
- Trim overgrown clumps to control spread; dispose of pruned pads carefully to prevent unintended propagation
- Thin dense growth to improve airflow and reduce pest risk
Toxicity
Warning: this plant may be toxic.
Pets: ASPCA: Non-toxic; spines may cause physical irritation if ingested or touched
Humans: No toxic compounds; physical irritation from spines is the only hazard
Garden Uses & Culture
Culture: Symbolizes endurance and adaptation in desert landscapes
Usage: Edible fruit (tunas) used for jams, syrups, and beverages; ornamental xeriscaping plant
