Plant Needs
Characteristics
- Leaf: Paired, slender blue-green needles, 6–12 cm long, lasting 2–3 years
- Cone: Woody, ovoid female cones 6–12 cm long, opening when mature to release seeds
- Bark: Thick, fissured, gray-brown bark on mature trunks
Care Guide
Water deeply once every 2–3 weeks during establishment; reduce watering once fully mature
Apply slow-release granular feed once in early spring to support new growth. Use a low-nitrogen, phosphorus-rich feed to promote cone and root development
Eggshell powder top-dress:Crush dried eggshells into fine powder; sprinkle 1–2 tbsp around the base of the tree; avoid direct contact with the trunk to prevent bark irritation- Remove dead, damaged, or diseased branches in late winter to maintain structural integrity
- Thin overcrowded inner branches to improve air circulation and reduce fire risk in dry regions
- Avoid heavy pruning; only trim for safety or to shape the open canopy as needed
Toxicity
Warning: this plant may be toxic.
Pets: ASPCA: Non-toxic to cats; no adverse effects from ingestion of needles or cones
Humans: No documented toxicity to humans; resin may cause mild skin irritation in sensitive individuals
Garden Uses & Culture
Culture: Symbolizes resilience in arid landscapes; widely used in Mediterranean reforestation projects to prevent soil erosion
Usage: Ornamental landscape tree; timber production for construction; resin extraction for industrial and medicinal uses
