Plant Needs
Characteristics
- Leaf: Basal rosette of oblong to lanceolate leaves; upper stem leaves are smaller and clasping
- Flower: Small greenish-white flowers arranged in whorled clusters along branching stems
- Seed Head: Curved, horn-like bracts surround mature seeds, giving the species its common name
Care Guide
Water occasionally during prolonged dry spells to support flowering
No regular fertilization required. Fertilizing may encourage excessive foliage growth at the expense of seed head development
Eggshell powder top-dressing:Crush dried eggshells into a fine powder and sprinkle a thin layer around the base of the plant; avoid direct contact with stems to prevent fungal growth- Remove spent flower heads before seeds mature to prevent unwanted self-seeding
- Thin overcrowded seedlings to ensure adequate airflow and reduce competition for resources
- Cut back the entire plant to ground level after it finishes flowering to tidy garden beds
