Characteristics
- Leaf: Flat, dark green needles with silvery undersides, arranged radially on young shoots and flattened on mature branches
- Cone: Upright cylindrical female cones (10–20 cm long) that disintegrate when mature to release winged seeds
- Stem/Bark: Smooth grey bark on young trees, developing fissured, scaly texture with age
Care Guide
Water deeply every 7–10 days during dry spells; allow top 15 cm of soil to dry between waterings
Apply slow-release balanced fertilizer once in early spring. Young saplings may benefit from diluted liquid fertilizer once every 3 months in the first 3 years
Eggshell powder topdress:Crush dried eggshells into fine powder; sprinkle lightly around the base of young trees; avoid direct contact with the trunk to prevent rot- Remove dead or damaged branches in late winter to maintain tree structure and airflow
- Thin overcrowded lower branches to improve light penetration to the base of the tree
- Avoid heavy pruning, as conifers do not regrow foliage from old wood
