Characteristics
- Leaves: Rosette-forming, pale green to yellowish-green with elongated white or pale green spots, margins armed with small reddish-brown teeth;
- Flowers: Capitate (head-like) racemes bearing tubular yellow, orange, or red flowers;
- Stem: Acaulescent (stemless) or very short, freely offsetting to form dense clumps.
Care Guide
Water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry.
Apply a diluted, balanced succulent fertilizer once.. Feed sparingly during the active growing season; do not fertilize in winter.
Banana Peel Tea:Soak chopped banana peels in water for 24-48 hours. Strain and dilute 1:1 with water. Use to promote healthy root growth and winter blooming. Avoid leaving solid peels on the soil to prevent pests and odors.- Remove spent flower stalks at the base after blooming finishes;
- Carefully pull away dead or dried basal leaves to maintain neatness and prevent rot;
- Separate offsets (pups) if the clump becomes too crowded.
Toxicity
Warning: this plant may be toxic.
Pets: Toxic (per ASPCA): Ingestion of the latex can cause vomiting, lethargy, and diarrhea.
Humans: The latex beneath the skin of the leaves can cause gastrointestinal upset, cramping, and diarrhea if ingested.
Garden Uses & Culture
Culture: Widely cultivated in Western succulent collections and xeriscaping for its striking winter color and architectural form.
Usage: Excellent for rock gardens, container planting, and water-wise landscaping.
