Characteristics
- Leaves: Pendent, elongated, deeply corrugated or pleated, dark green, reaching up to 2 meters in length in mature specimens;
- Flowers: Inflorescence consists of a greenish-white to pale yellow spathe and a pale spadix;
- Stem: Short, thick stem, often growing epiphytically with thick aerial roots.
Care Guide
Water thoroughly when the top inch of the medium feels dry.
Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to quarter strength.. Feed regularly during the growing season; flush the pot periodically to prevent salt buildup.
Banana Peel Tea:Steep chopped banana peels in water for 24-48 hours, strain, and dilute 1:1 with water. Apply to the soil to support root and leaf health. Avoid leaving raw peels on the soil to prevent pests.- Remove yellowing or dead leaves at the base of the petiole using sterilized shears;
- Trim away any rotting or dried aerial roots during repotting;
- Wipe the large leaves regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and support photosynthesis.
Toxicity
Warning: this plant may be toxic.
Pets: Toxic per ASPCA; causes oral irritation, intense burning and irritation of mouth, tongue and lips, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.
Humans: Contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals; chewing or biting into the plant causes immediate oral irritation and swelling.
Garden Uses & Culture
Culture: Highly prized in Western aroid collector communities and botanical conservatories as a centerpiece specimen.
Usage: Cultivated primarily as a high-end ornamental houseplant or greenhouse specimen for its dramatic foliage.
