Characteristics
- Leaves: Small, dark green, lanceolate to ovate, slightly leathery with a prominent midrib;
- Flowers: Spathe is small, ovate, typically pale purple, lavender, or pinkish, shaped somewhat like a tulip; spadix is dark purple to blackish;
- Roots: Dense, thick root system adapted to clinging to rocks near streams (rheophytic).
Care Guide
Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry, maintaining even moisture.
Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to quarter strength.. Feed monthly during the active growing season; withhold fertilizer in winter.
Banana Peel Tea:Soak chopped banana peels in water for 24-48 hours. Strain and dilute 1:1 with water. Avoid using raw peels directly on soil to prevent pests and odors.- Remove yellowing or dead leaves at the base with sterilized shears;
- Snip off spent flower stalks near the base to encourage new blooms;
- Keep aerial roots intact or gently guide them into the soil medium.
Toxicity
Warning: this plant may be toxic.
Pets: Toxic to cats per ASPCA. Contains insoluble calcium oxalates causing oral irritation, pain and swelling of mouth, tongue and lips, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.
Humans: Contains calcium oxalate crystals which can cause irritation of the mouth, lips, and throat if ingested, and possible contact dermatitis.
Garden Uses & Culture
Culture: In Western houseplant culture, miniature Anthuriums are highly prized for bringing a continuous splash of color to small indoor spaces and terrariums.
Usage: Excellent as a potted houseplant, terrarium specimen, or desktop plant.
