Plant Needs
Characteristics
- Leaves: Alternate, lanceolate to ovate, green to dark bronze or red, with entire margins and prominent venation;
- Flowers: Dense, feathery, plume-like inflorescences (spikes) standing erect above the foliage, in vibrant shades of red, yellow, orange, and pink;
- Stem: Erect, fleshy, often ribbed, green or tinged with red, branching depending on the cultivar.
Care Guide
Water deeply 2-3 times a week during hot, dry spells, allowing topsoil to dry slightly.
Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every two weeks to encourage strong vegetative growth.. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which promotes leafy growth at the expense of the colorful plumes.
Banana Peel Tea:Steep chopped banana peels in water for 24-48 hours. Dilute 1:1 with water and apply to the soil to promote vibrant plume development. Discard peels in compost to avoid fruit flies and odors.- Pinching: Pinch back the center stem when the plant is young (about 6 inches tall) to encourage lateral branching and more blooms;
- Deadheading: Remove spent or faded plumes to redirect energy into new flower production and maintain a tidy appearance;
- Air Circulation: Thin out overcrowded stems to improve airflow and prevent powdery mildew.
Toxicity
Warning: this plant may be toxic.
Pets: Non-toxic to cats per ASPCA.
Humans: Non-toxic to humans. The leaves and flowers of the wild type are even consumed as a vegetable in some cultures, though ornamental varieties are not recommended for eating.
Garden Uses & Culture
Culture: In Victorian flower language, Celosia represents humor, warmth, and silliness due to its bright, fuzzy, and somewhat comical appearance.
Usage: Highly valued as a bedding plant, border plant, and container specimen. The plumes are excellent for fresh cut flower arrangements and retain their color beautifully when dried for winter bouquets.
