Plant Needs
Characteristics
- Leaf: Scale-like, blue-gray to silvery-green, tightly pressed to stems in opposite overlapping pairs
- Cones: Round, woody female cones (2–3 cm diameter) that mature over 2 growing seasons
- Stem/Bark: Reddish-brown, fibrous bark that peels in thin, papery strips as the tree ages
Care Guide
Water deeply every 1–2 weeks for young trees; mature trees only need supplemental water during prolonged drought
Light application of slow-release, low-nitrogen fertilizer in early spring. Over-fertilization can cause excessive foliage growth and reduce drought tolerance
Eggshell powder topdress:Crush clean, dried eggshells into fine powder; topdress 1–2 cups around the tree base every 6 months to improve soil drainage and add calcium- Remove dead, damaged, or diseased branches in late winter before new growth emerges
- Thin overcrowded inner branches to improve air circulation and reduce pest risk
- Avoid heavy pruning, as conifers do not regrow foliage from old, woody stems
Toxicity
Warning: this plant may be toxic.
Pets: ASPCA confirmed non-toxic to cats; no toxic compounds identified
Humans: Non-toxic to humans; no known adverse health effects from ingestion or contact
Garden Uses & Culture
