Characteristics
- Leaf: Basal rosette of narrow, densely hairy silver-green leaves; stem leaves are smaller, clasping, and less hairy
- Flower: Dense cylindrical spikes of funnel-shaped blue to purple blooms that open sequentially from the bottom of the spike upward
- Stem: Stiff, upright, hairy central stem with branching secondary flowering spikes
Care Guide
Keep soil consistently moist during active growth and flowering; avoid waterlogging
Diluted balanced liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks. Use a low-nitrogen fertilizer to encourage flower production rather than excessive leaf growth
Banana peel tea:Steep 2–3 chopped banana peels in 1L of water for 3 days; dilute the mixture 1:20 with water before applying as a root drench; discard solid peels to avoid pest infestations- Deadhead spent flower spikes after blooming to prevent unwanted self-seeding if desired
- Remove yellowing basal leaves to improve airflow and reduce fungal disease risk
- Cut back the entire plant to ground level after flowering if growing as a biennial
