Plant Needs
Characteristics
- Leaf: Reduced to small, opposite scale-like structures at stem joints; non-photosynthetic
- Stem: Green, segmented, cylindrical stems that perform primary photosynthesis
- Flower: Tiny, cone-like reproductive structures; male flowers produce yellow, wind-dispersed pollen
Care Guide
Water every 7–10 days during active growth; allow soil to dry fully between waterings
Apply a diluted, low-nitrogen fertilizer once monthly. Use a fertilizer formulated for xerophytic shrubs to avoid nutrient burn in dry soil
Eggshell powder top dressing:Crush clean, dried eggshells into fine powder; sprinkle 1–2 tbsp over topsoil every 2 months to improve soil drainage and add calcium- Remove dead, damaged, or diseased stems in early spring to promote new, healthy growth
- Thin overcrowded stems to improve airflow and reduce fungal infection risk
- Shape the shrub lightly after flowering to maintain a compact, tidy form
Toxicity
Warning: this plant may be toxic.
Pets: Contains toxic alkaloids; ingestion may trigger tremors, elevated heart rate, seizures, and organ damage
Humans: Contains ephedrine alkaloids; ingestion can cause cardiovascular stimulation, hypertension, and neurological distress
Garden Uses & Culture
Culture: Used in traditional Eurasian medicine for respiratory relief, though regulated in many regions due to alkaloid toxicity
Usage: Ornamental ground cover in xeriscape gardens; historically harvested for medicinal alkaloid extraction
