Characteristics
- Leaves: Small, medium green, ovate to lanceolate, arranged oppositely on the stems;
- Flowers: Features double white bracts surrounding tiny true flowers (cyathia), creating a dense, fluffy appearance;
- Stems: Slender, highly branched, containing a milky white latex sap that bleeds when broken.
Care Guide
Water when the top inch of soil feels dry.
Apply a balanced organic fertilizer to encourage new growth.. Feed regularly during the growing season for best performance.
Banana Peel Tea:Soak chopped banana peels in water for 24-48 hours. Strain and use the liquid to water the plant to encourage prolific blooming. Discard peels in compost to avoid attracting pests.- Wear gloves when pruning to protect skin from the irritating milky sap;
- Self-cleaning nature means deadheading is not required;
- Trim back by up to one-third in mid-summer if the plant becomes leggy to encourage bushy growth.
Toxicity
Warning: this plant may be toxic.
Pets: Toxic per ASPCA. Ingestion can cause gastrointestinal irritation, and sap exposure causes dermal irritation.
Humans: The milky sap can cause skin and eye irritation, and gastrointestinal upset if ingested.
