Plant Needs
Characteristics
- Leaves: Small, elliptic to lanceolate, medium green, sparsely arranged on thin stems;
- Flowers: True flowers are tiny and inconspicuous, surrounded by prominent, showy, pure white double bracts that resemble small petals;
- Stems: Slender, wiry, branching freely, containing a milky white latex sap when broken or cut.
Care Guide
Water moderately, allowing the soil surface to dry out between waterings.
Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer to encourage new growth.. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can lead to excessive foliage at the expense of flowers.
Banana Peel Tea:Soak chopped banana peels in water for 24-48 hours, strain, and dilute 1:1 with water. Pour around the base to boost blooming. Discard solids in compost to avoid attracting pests.- Self-cleaning: No deadheading is required as the plant naturally drops spent bracts;
- Shaping: Lightly trim stems at any time to maintain a compact, rounded shape;
- Safety: Always wear gloves when pruning to avoid contact with the irritating milky sap.
Toxicity
Warning: this plant may be toxic.
Pets: Toxic per ASPCA. Ingestion or contact with sap can cause gastrointestinal and dermal irritation.
Humans: Milky sap can cause contact dermatitis, eye irritation, and mild gastrointestinal upset if ingested.
Garden Uses & Culture
Culture: A staple in modern Western container gardening, highly valued as a "filler" plant in mixed hanging baskets and patio planters for its airy, baby's-breath-like aesthetic.
Usage: Excellent for container borders, hanging baskets, window boxes, and as a landscape edging plant.
