Characteristics
- Leaves: Heart-shaped (cordate), deep purple to almost black, with prominent venation and smooth margins;
- Stems: Trailing, fleshy, purplish-green, rooting at the nodes when in contact with moist soil;
- Flowers: Rarely produced on ornamental cultivars; if present, pale pink to light purple, trumpet-shaped;
- Roots: Forms tuberous roots underground, though much smaller and less palatable than agricultural sweet potatoes.
