Characteristics
- Leaf: Juvenile leaves are sharp, needle-like; mature foliage is scale-like, arranged in opposite pairs
- Cone: Female cones are berry-like, blue-black when mature, coated in waxy bloom
- Stem/Bark: Young stems are green; mature bark is reddish-brown, peeling in thin strips
Care Guide
Water deeply once every 1–2 weeks during extended dry spells
Apply slow-release granular fertilizer once at the start of growth. Use a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer to prevent weak, leggy growth
Eggshell powder topdressing:Crush dried eggshells into fine powder; sprinkle lightly on soil surface and water in to release nutrients gradually; avoid overapplication to prevent pH imbalance- Prune in late winter to early spring to shape; avoid heavy shearing of mature scale-like foliage
- Remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches to improve airflow and reduce pest risk
- Trim back new growth to maintain desired form for bonsai or hedge specimens
