Characteristics
- Leaf: Sharp needle-like juvenile leaves (6–12 mm) and scale-like adult leaves (1–2 mm) on mature stems
- Cones: Female cones are berry-like, blue-black when ripe, with a waxy protective coating
- Stem/Bark: Reddish-brown peeling bark on mature plants; dense, upright branching growth habit
Care Guide
Water deeply every 7–10 days during extended dry spells; avoid overwatering
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer once in early spring. Do not over-fertilize, as this can disrupt the plant's drought-tolerant adaptations
Eggshell powder topdressing:Crush dried eggshells into fine powder; sprinkle lightly around the base of the plant in early spring; avoid direct contact with foliage to prevent irritation- Prune in late winter to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches
- Shape lightly to maintain desired form; avoid heavy pruning of mature wood, as it may not regrow
- Thin dense growth to improve airflow and reduce risk of fungal disease
- Remove suckers to maintain a single trunk form when growing as a small tree
