Plant Needs
Characteristics
- Leaves: Small, narrow, dark green, hispid (hairy), leathery, and alternately arranged;
- Flowers: Intense vivid blue, funnel-shaped with 5 lobes, borne in terminal cymes;
- Stem: Woody at the base, much-branched, with a spreading or prostrate habit;
- Fruit: Produces small, hard, stone-like nutlets.
Care Guide
Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
Apply a light, balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring if soil is very poor.. Requires very little feeding; over-fertilizing can reduce flowering and cause weak growth.
Coffee Grounds Soil Amendment:Mix a small amount of used, cooled coffee grounds into the topsoil to maintain slight acidity and improve drainage; avoid thick layers to prevent mold.- Lightly shear back immediately after flowering to maintain a compact, bushy shape;
- Avoid cutting hard into old, leafless wood as it may not regenerate;
- Remove any dead or damaged stems in late winter.
Toxicity
Warning: this plant may be toxic.
Pets: May cause mild gastrointestinal upset; chronic ingestion poses a risk of hepatic issues due to alkaloids.
Humans: Contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids which can cause liver toxicity if ingested in large quantities over time.
Garden Uses & Culture
Culture: A staple in European rock gardens, symbolizing resilience and enduring beauty in harsh, rocky environments.
Usage: Excellent as a ground cover, for draping over retaining walls, or in dry rock gardens and coastal landscapes.
