Plant Needs
Characteristics
- Leaves: Broad, leathery, elliptic to obovate, dark green, arranged in a distichous rosette;
- Flowers: Large, showy, zygomorphic, typically white with a yellow and red-spotted lip, borne on a long arching raceme;
- Roots: Thick, fleshy, silvery-grey aerial roots with a spongy velamen layer for absorbing atmospheric moisture.
Care Guide
Water thoroughly once a week, allowing the medium to dry out slightly between waterings.
Apply a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted to quarter-strength weekly.. Fertilize "weakly, weekly" after watering to prevent root burn.
Banana Peel Tea:Soak chopped banana peels in water for 24-48 hours, strain, and dilute 1:1 with water. Use as a gentle potassium boost during the blooming phase. Avoid leaving solid peels in the pot to prevent mold and fungus gnats.- Cut the flower spike down to the base once it turns brown and dies completely;
- If the spike is still green after blooms drop, cut it above a node to potentially encourage a secondary branch of flowers;
- Remove dead, mushy, or papery roots during repotting using sterilized shears.
