Plant Needs
Characteristics
- Leaf: Dark green needles, 2 per fascicle, 10–18 cm long, stiff and slightly curved
- Cone: Ovoid-conical, 5–10 cm long, woody, opening to release seeds when mature
- Stem/Bark: Thick, furrowed brown bark; young stems have a resinous greenish-brown coating
Care Guide
Water young saplings every 7–10 days during dry periods; established trees need no supplemental water
Apply slow-release granular fertilizer once in early spring. Use a low-nitrogen fertilizer to promote healthy root and cone development without excessive foliage growth
Eggshell powder top-dressing:Crush dried eggshells into a fine powder; sprinkle 1–2 tbsp around the base of saplings in early spring; avoid direct contact with tree stems to prevent irritation- Remove dead or damaged branches in late winter to improve airflow and reduce disease risk
- Thin crowded lower branches on young trees to increase sunlight penetration to the root zone
- Avoid heavy pruning to preserve the tree's natural conical or flat-topped growth form
Toxicity
