Plant Needs
Characteristics
- Fronds: Evergreen, bipinnate to tripinnate, glossy dark green, leathery texture; pinnules feature distinct aristate (bristle-like) tips.
- Rhizomes: Creeping, densely covered with brown to reddish-brown scales.
- Sori: Round, located on the abaxial (lower) surface of the fronds, protected by kidney-shaped indusia.
Care Guide
Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels slightly dry.
Apply a half-strength balanced liquid fertilizer.. Ferns are light feeders; avoid over-fertilizing to prevent frond burn.
Aquarium Water:Use dirty aquarium change water to water the fern; it provides gentle, natural nitrogen without the risk of chemical burn. Ensure the water is fresh-water, not saltwater.- Remove dead, yellowing, or damaged fronds at the base to improve appearance.
- Prune to maintain airflow around the rhizomes, reducing the risk of fungal issues.
- Do not cut into the creeping rhizome unless propagating.
Toxicity
Warning: this plant may be toxic.
Pets: Non-toxic to cats per ASPCA guidelines for true ferns.
Humans: Generally considered non-toxic to humans.
Garden Uses & Culture
Culture: During the Victorian era's "Pteridomania" (fern craze) in Europe, intricate and glossy ferns like this were highly sought after for indoor Wardian cases and shaded glasshouses.
Usage: Excellent for shaded woodland gardens, underplanting beneath trees, indoor terrariums, and as long-lasting cut foliage in floral arrangements.
