Characteristics
- Leaves: Large, asymmetrical, palmately lobed resembling grape leaves, green with prominent venation, margins slightly serrate to ciliate;
- Flowers: Small, white to pale pink, borne in dichotomous cymes, monoecious with separate male and female flowers on the same plant;
- Stem: Upright, fleshy, branching, green to reddish-brown, developing a shrub-like habit over time.
Care Guide
Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry.
Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer.. Feed regularly during the active growing season.
Banana Peel Tea:Steep chopped banana peels in water for 24-48 hours. Strain and dilute 1:1 with water before applying to the soil. Avoid leaving raw peels on the soil surface to prevent pests and mold.- Pinch back growing tips in spring to encourage a bushier, more compact habit;
- Remove dead or yellowing leaves promptly to maintain hygiene and prevent fungal issues;
- Cut back spent flower stalks to redirect energy into foliage growth.
Toxicity
Warning: this plant may be toxic.
Pets: Toxic per ASPCA. Soluble calcium oxalates cause intense burning of the mouth, tongue, and lips.
Humans: Mildly toxic if ingested due to soluble calcium oxalates, causing mouth and throat irritation.
Garden Uses & Culture
Culture: In Western floriography, begonias traditionally symbolize caution, deep thoughts, or a warning to be observant.
Usage: Cultivated primarily as an ornamental foliage plant for shaded borders, patios, and as a striking indoor houseplant.
