Plant Needs
Characteristics
- Leaves: Large, alternate, oval to elliptic, up to 25 cm long, often covered with fine hairs, with entire or slightly toothed margins;
- Flowers: Pendulous, trumpet-shaped, very large (up to 30 cm long), highly fragrant at night, with a fused corolla flaring at the mouth;
- Stem: Woody trunk with a branching canopy, pale gray-brown bark that becomes rougher with age;
- Fruit: Unarmed, spindle-shaped berry, though rarely produced in cultivation without specific pollinators.
Care Guide
Water deeply and frequently, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged
Apply a balanced fertilizer to promote vigorous leafy growth. Heavy feeders; regular fertilization is crucial for sustaining their massive blooms.
Banana Peel Tea:Steep chopped banana peels in water for 48 hours. Dilute 1:1 with water and apply to the base to boost blooming. Discard peels in compost to avoid foul odors and do not leave them in water for more than a few days.- Timing: Prune in late fall or early spring before new growth begins;
- Technique: Cut back branches above the first main "Y" fork to ensure the plant continues to produce flowers;
- Safety: Always wear thick gloves and long sleeves when pruning, as the sap is highly toxic and can be absorbed through cuts or cause eye irritation if transferred.
Toxicity
Warning: this plant may be toxic.
Pets: Highly toxic per ASPCA. Ingestion causes severe central nervous system and gastrointestinal issues.
Humans: Highly toxic. All parts contain dangerous levels of tropane alkaloids (scopolamine, hyoscyamine, and atropine), which can cause severe anticholinergic poisoning if ingested or if sap enters the eyes.
Garden Uses & Culture
Culture: In Victorian floriography and gothic literature, its intoxicating evening scent and deadly toxicity made it a symbol of deceptive beauty, hidden danger, and the perilous nature of unchecked desires.
Usage: Grown primarily as a striking ornamental specimen plant in gardens, patios, and large containers for its dramatic floral display and evening fragrance.
