Characteristics
- Stem: Columnar, segmented, with paired sharp spines along vertical ridges; green to gray-green fleshy tissue
- Leaf: Tiny, ephemeral leaves that drop within weeks, leaving small spine scars along stem ridges
- Flower: Clusters of small yellowish-green cyathia at stem tips; non-showy but distinct
Care Guide
Water thoroughly when top 10–15 cm of soil is dry; reduce frequency during extreme heatwaves
Diluted cactus fertilizer once every 2 months. Use low-nitrogen fertilizer to promote healthy stem growth without excessive foliage
Eggshell powder topdressing:Crush fully dried eggshells into fine powder; sprinkle lightly on soil surface; avoid direct contact with stems to prevent sap irritation- Wear nitrile gloves to avoid contact with toxic sap during pruning
- Remove dead or discolored stem segments at the base to maintain plant health
- Trim leggy growth in early spring to encourage compact branching
