Plant Needs
Characteristics
- Leaves: Arching, strap-like, linear green leaves forming dense clumps;
- Flowers: Large, trumpet-shaped, very dark blackish-red to purplish-black petals with a contrasting bright yellow-green throat, each flower lasting only one day;
- Stem: Leafless scapes rising above the foliage bearing multiple flower buds;
- Roots: Thick, fleshy, tuberous root system adapted for water storage.
Care Guide
Water deeply once a week, more frequently during extreme heat or dry spells
Apply a balanced organic fertilizer as new foliage emerges. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers which promote leaves at the expense of flowers.
Banana Peel Tea:Steep chopped banana peels in water for 24-48 hours. Dilute 1:1 with water and apply to the base to support robust blooming. Discard peels in compost to avoid attracting pests.- Snap off spent flowers daily to maintain appearance (deadheading);
- Cut flower scapes all the way to the base once all buds on the stalk have bloomed;
- Remove dead or decaying foliage in late autumn or early spring to prevent rot and pest overwintering.
Toxicity
Warning: this plant may be toxic.
Pets: Highly toxic to cats per ASPCA; ingestion of any part (especially leaves and flowers) can cause acute renal failure.
Humans: Generally considered non-toxic to humans; flowers are edible but caution is advised.
