Characteristics
- Leaves: Palmately compound with 7 to 9 leaflets, glossy green with irregular golden-yellow variegation, arranged in an umbrella-like rosette;
- Stems: Upright, woody, often producing aerial roots in high humidity environments;
- Flowers: Small, greenish-yellow, borne in terminal panicles (rarely seen on indoor specimens).
Care Guide
Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry.
Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength.. Do not fertilize during winter dormancy.
Banana Peel Tea:Soak chopped banana peels in water for 24-48 hours, strain, and use the liquid to water the plant. Avoid leaving solid peels on the soil surface to prevent fungus gnats.- Pinch back new growth to encourage a bushier, more compact shape;
- Remove any dead, yellowing, or damaged leaves at the base of the stem;
- Prune leggy stems in early spring to maintain the desired height and form.
Toxicity
Warning: this plant may be toxic.
Pets: Toxic to cats (per ASPCA) due to insoluble calcium oxalate crystals.
Humans: Mildly toxic if ingested; sap may cause minor skin irritation.

Culture: Popularized in Western interior design during the 1970s houseplant boom for its architectural, umbrella-like canopy and forgiving nature.
Usage: Widely used as an indoor ornamental floor plant, office plant, and occasionally trained as an indoor bonsai.
