Plant Needs
Sunlight
Requires full sun for optimal flowering; tolerates light partial shade in extreme summer heat to prevent leaf scorch
Watering
Water deeply and infrequently, allowing the top 10–15 cm of soil to dry completely between waterings to avoid root rot
Temperature
Tolerates mild frosts down to 5°C; prefers warm, dry summers with good airflow to reduce fungal disease risk
Characteristics
- Leaf: Silvery-grey, linear to lanceolate leaves with serrated margins, covered in fine, soft hairs.
- Flower: Cylindrical golden-yellow inflorescences up to 15 cm long, with prominent, curved styles forming a "brush" appearance.
- Stem: Woody, branching stems with rough, greyish-brown, fissured bark.
Care Guide
Watering
Water deeply every 7–10 days; increase frequency during prolonged dry spells
Fertilization
Apply a low-phosphorus slow-release native plant fertilizer once. Do not use high-phosphorus fertilizers, as Banksia species are adapted to low-phosphorus soils
Crushed eggshell top-dressing:Crush dried eggshells into a fine powder and sprinkle lightly around the base of the plant; avoid contact with foliage to prevent potential burningPruning
- Remove spent flower spikes after blooming to encourage new growth and maintain a tidy shape
- Thin crowded inner branches to improve airflow and reduce fungal disease susceptibility
- Prune lightly in late spring to control size; avoid heavy pruning of old wood, as Banksia has limited regrowth from mature stems
