Plant Needs
Characteristics
- Leaves: Evergreen, pinnately compound, with thick, leathery, dark green leaflets that have a waxy cuticle to prevent water loss;
- Flowers: Showy, highly fragrant, purple to violet pea-like flowers arranged in dense, drooping terminal racemes;
- Fruits: Hard, woody, constricted pods covered in silvery pubescence, containing bright red, highly toxic seeds;
- Bark: Dark gray to black, smooth when young but becoming deeply fissured with age.
Care Guide
Water once every 1-2 weeks during active growth, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
Apply a light layer of compost or a low-nitrogen organic top-dressing before new growth begins.. Avoid heavy fertilization, especially high nitrogen, which can reduce flowering and cause weak growth.
Banana Peel Tea:Steep chopped banana peels in water for 24 hours. Dilute 1:1 with water and apply to the base to support blooming. Avoid applying raw peels directly to the soil to prevent attracting pests.- Prune immediately after flowering to shape the plant before next year's buds set;
- Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain good airflow and structural integrity;
- Wear gloves when pruning to avoid contact with toxic sap or accidental ingestion of seeds;
- Avoid heavy pruning, as the plant grows slowly and takes considerable time to recover.
Toxicity
Warning: this plant may be toxic.
Pets: Severe toxicity per ASPCA guidelines for related mescalbean species; ingestion of seeds or foliage causes severe neurological and gastrointestinal distress.
Humans: Highly toxic if ingested. The bright red seeds contain cytisine and other quinolizidine alkaloids, which can cause severe poisoning and respiratory failure.
Garden Uses & Culture
Culture: In the American Southwest, the striking red seeds of related mescalbean species were historically used by indigenous tribes in ceremonial dress and jewelry, though their extreme toxicity was well known and deeply respected.
Usage: Highly popular in xeriscaping and water-wise gardens as a specimen shrub, small patio tree, or informal screen.
