Characteristics
- Leaf: Reduced to small, sharp spines along stem edges; no true foliage leaves
- Stem: Crested, fan-shaped green growth with pale white variegation; fleshy succulent tissue
- Inflorescence: Small, inconspicuous cyathia (false flowers) produced on mature outdoor plants
Care Guide
Water when the top 5 cm of soil is fully dry; allow excess water to drain completely
Diluted cactus fertilizer applied once monthly. Use a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer diluted to half strength to avoid burning succulent tissue
Eggshell powder topdress:Crush thoroughly rinsed, dried eggshells into fine powder; sprinkle a thin layer on soil surface; avoid direct contact with the crested stem to prevent rot- Remove dead or discolored sections of the crested growth to improve airflow and prevent rot
- Trim any non-crested "normal" shoots to maintain the compact, fan-shaped form
- Wear nitrile gloves during pruning to avoid contact with toxic milky sap
- Avoid pruning during winter dormancy to minimize stress to the plant
