Plant Needs
Characteristics
- Leaf: Silvery lance-shaped leaves covered in dense soft hairs, arranged in whorls around upright stems.
- Flower: Dioecious; male plants bear yellow cone-like inflorescences, female plants produce small greenish cones that mature into woody seed heads.
- Stem: Slender upright stems with smooth grey bark that becomes rough and fissured with age.
Care Guide
Water every 7–10 days during dry spells; reduce watering during natural rainfall
Apply a low-nitrogen slow-release fertilizer once at the start of the growing season. Do not over-fertilize, as high nitrogen levels can diminish the plant's characteristic silvery foliage
Eggshell powder top-dressing:Crush dried eggshells into a fine powder; sprinkle lightly around the base in early spring, avoiding direct contact with stems to prevent irritation- Prune immediately after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage new growth.
- Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches to improve airflow and reduce disease risk.
- Thin dense leaf whorls to allow light penetration to inner stems and promote uniform growth.
- Avoid heavy pruning of mature trees, as they have limited regrowth capacity from old wood.
