Characteristics
- Leaf: Thick, rigid, gray-green leaves with sharp terminal spines and rough, toothed margins
- Stem: Short, underground caudex; tall flowering stalk emerges at maturity
- Inflorescence: Branched stalk with clusters of tubular yellow flowers (only on mature, dying rosettes)
Care Guide
Water deeply once every 1–2 weeks when soil is fully dry
Diluted low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer once monthly. Do not fertilize in winter, when the plant is dormant
Eggshell powder topdress:Crush dried eggshells into a fine powder; sprinkle lightly on the soil surface; avoid direct contact with leaves to prevent tissue burn- Remove dead, brown outer leaves to maintain rosette shape and improve airflow
- Trim the spent flowering stalk after the parent rosette dies back
- Separate offset pups in spring for propagation; allow cut surfaces to callus before planting

Humans: Contains saponins and calcium oxalate crystals; ingestion causes mild oral and gastrointestinal irritation; spine punctures may cause skin inflammation
