- Leaf: Thick, leathery, spiny leaves with 3–5 sharp, hooked spines per margin; glossy dark green upper surface
- Flower: Small, white, fragrant clusters; dioecious (male and female flowers on separate plants)
- Fruit: Bright red, berry-like drupes (female plants only) persisting through winter
Care Guide
Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged; increase frequency during prolonged dry spells
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support new growth. Avoid over-fertilizing to prevent leaf burn and excessive foliage growth at the expense of berries
Eggshell powder topdressing:Crush dried eggshells into a fine powder, sprinkle lightly around the base of the plant, and work into the top 2 cm of soil; avoid direct contact with foliage- Prune in late winter to early spring to shape the shrub and remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches
- Thin dense growth to improve airflow and light penetration for better berry production
- Remove suckers at the base to maintain the desired form and prevent overcrowding
